Hybrid care

The best of both: talk to a provider online, then get the lab test or pick up the prescription close to home – without starting over at every step.

What hybrid care means

Hybrid care mixes virtual visits with the few things that have to happen in person. You start online with a licensed provider. If you need a test, they send the order to a partner lab near you; if you need medicine, it goes to the pharmacy you choose.

The results come back to your provider, who follows up with you online. One plan, one care team, far fewer trips.

How the pieces fit

  • The online visit

Video, phone or message – usually the same day.

  • Lab tests nearby

When your provider orders a test, you visit a partner lab and the results come straight back to them.

  • Your local pharmacy

Prescriptions are sent to the pharmacy you pick, often ready the same day.

  • Follow-up online

Go over results and next steps in a follow-up check-in.

When you will still need an office

  • A hands-on exam, vaccines or imaging such as X-rays
  • Procedures, stitches or anything that needs equipment
  • Emergencies

Your provider will tell you when that is the case and help you work out where to go. A virtual visit is not an emergency service. For chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, signs of a stroke or a serious injury, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) at any time.

Questions about hybrid care

Can an online doctor order lab work?

Yes, when a test will help. Your provider sends the order to a partner lab and reviews the results with you.

Where are the partner labs?

It depends on where you live. Your provider will show you the options near you when they order a test.

Does it replace my own doctor?

It doesn't have to. Many members use CheckMD for everyday problems and share their visit notes with their own doctor.
