Message-based visits
Not every question needs a video call. Answer a few questions online, a licensed provider reviews them and replies with a plan – on your schedule, from wherever you are.
What a message-based visit is
In an asynchronous visit you and your provider don't need to be online at the same time. You tell us what is going on through a short set of questions – and photos when they help, like for a rash – and a licensed provider reviews everything and writes back.
If they need to know more, they message you or set up a quick call. If treatment is right for you, any prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose.
When it works well
Simple, familiar problems
Things like a typical UTI, pink eye or seasonal allergies.
Skin you can photograph
Rashes, acne and spots are often easier to show than to describe. See skin care online.
Refills and check-ins
Prescription refills and quick updates after a visit.
Mental health check-ins
A private way to tell a provider how your mood, stress and sleep have been. See mental health support.
When a live visit is better
- Symptoms that are new, unusual or getting worse quickly
- Anything where your provider needs to ask a lot of follow-up questions
- When you simply want to talk it through with someone
You can always choose a video or phone visit instead, and your provider may suggest one. A virtual visit is not an emergency service. For chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, signs of a stroke or a serious injury, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) at any time.

Questions about message-based visits
How quickly will I hear back?
Most messages are answered the same day. If your provider needs more information, they will ask.
Can I get a prescription without a video call?
Sometimes, yes – when it is safe and right for you. Some medicines and some states require a live visit; your provider will tell you if that applies.
Is it private?
Yes. Your answers and photos go only to your care team and are kept in your account.
What is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous care?
Synchronous care happens live, by video or phone. Asynchronous care happens by message, so you and your provider reply when it suits you. CheckMD offers both.
