Telehealth vs. in-person visits

Is a virtual visit really as good as going in? For many everyday problems, yes. For some things, no. Here is how to tell the difference.

Where telehealth works well

  • Common infections and illnesses: colds, flu, sinus and ear infections, sore throats, UTIs, pink eye
  • Skin problems you can show on camera or in a photo
  • Prescription refills and medicine questions
  • Stress, anxiety, low mood and sleep problems
  • Follow-up after a visit and going over test results

For these, a virtual visit is usually faster and easier than an office visit. See everything we treat.

Where an office visit is better

  • Anything that needs a hands-on exam, like belly pain or a possible broken bone
  • Vaccines, stitches, X-rays and most procedures
  • Symptoms that are severe or getting worse fast

A virtual visit is not an emergency service. For chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, signs of a stroke or a serious injury, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) at any time.

Side by side

  • Time

Virtual: no travel or waiting room. Office: plan for the trip and the wait.

  • Exam

Virtual: questions, camera and photos. Office: a full hands-on exam.

  • Prescriptions

Both can prescribe when it is right for you.

  • Tests

Virtual: ordered at a partner lab. Office: often on the spot.

Questions about telehealth and office visits

Can I get antibiotics online?

Yes, when you actually need them – for example for many UTIs or a bacterial sinus infection. Antibiotics don't help colds or flu, and a good provider won't prescribe them "just in case".

Is telehealth as good as an in-person visit?

For many common problems it works just as well. When it doesn't, your provider will tell you and help you find in-person care.

What if the online provider can't help me?

They will explain why and tell you where to go next, such as an urgent care clinic or the emergency room.
