Signs of a yeast infection

Vaginal yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a yeast that normally lives in the body. Antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes and hormonal changes can all set one off. Typical signs:

  • Itching and irritation of the vagina and vulva
  • Thick, white discharge that looks a bit like cottage cheese, usually without a strong smell
  • Burning, especially when peeing or during sex
  • Redness and swelling

How a virtual visit helps

Your provider asks about your symptoms and history in a private conversation – no exam table. If it sounds like a yeast infection, treatment is simple: an antifungal pill or a cream or suppository, sent to the pharmacy you choose.

Some symptoms look alike. A strong fishy smell points more toward bacterial vaginosis, and new discharge after a new partner may need STI testing – your provider will tell you if a test makes sense and where to get it.

Medicines your provider may prescribe

  • Fluconazole (Diflucan) – usually a single tablet
  • Antifungal creams or suppositories such as miconazole or clotrimazole

Only when it is right for you: your provider checks your symptoms, allergies, other medicines and health history first. Prescriptions go to the pharmacy you choose.

What you can do at home right now

  • Wear loose, cotton underwear
  • Avoid douches and scented products
  • Change out of wet swimsuits or workout clothes quickly

When to be seen in person

  • This is your first yeast infection, or you are not sure that is what it is
  • You are pregnant
  • You have four or more yeast infections a year
  • Fever, pain in the belly or pelvis, sores or blisters
  • Symptoms that don't improve after treatment

A virtual visit is not an emergency service. For chest pain, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, signs of a stroke or a serious injury, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) at any time.

Questions about yeast infections

How fast does treatment work?

Many people feel better within a day or two, and symptoms usually clear within a week.

Should I just use an over-the-counter cream?

If you have had a confirmed yeast infection before and the symptoms are the same, that can be reasonable. If anything is different, or it keeps coming back, talk to a provider first.

Does my partner need treatment?

Usually not. Yeast infections are not considered sexually transmitted, but a partner with symptoms should get checked.

How much does an online visit cost?

Visits are part of your CheckMD membership – one yearly price, and you don't need insurance. You pay the pharmacy for any medicine. See the current plans on our pricing page or read about telehealth without insurance.

Can I be seen today?

Most visits happen the same day. Request a visit, choose video or phone and pick the earliest time.

What if I don't get better?

Book a follow-up visit. Your provider can adjust your treatment or tell you where to be seen in person. If you get worse quickly, don't wait – get urgent care.
